Quartet Mixers

Quartet mixers are events where anyone interested in trying quarteting is invited to attend. All parts and other area choruses are invited. There are usually one or two people with a good ear there to listen objectively and recommend voice combinations that blend well.

The resulting voice combinations will hopefully discuss things and each individual commit or not commit to a particular group. The songs used for these events are usually regional songs and familiar to all.

Some Suggested Guidelines

Once the groups are formed, it is up to each individual to decide whether to continue. Developing a  good singing and working relationhip between 4 individuals who may or may not know each other well can be difficult. Compromise is key. Here are some suggestions from long-time quartet people that may be helpful:

  • Discuss what your goal is: to compete, to be just a show/performing quartet, to just rehearse chorus music together. Some people do not want to compete. They just like to perform. If all your goals don't match, this may not be a good group for you.
  • Set a performance goal or deadline, perhaps a holiday show performance, or a singing valentine, or one particular chorus performance. Learn a 2-3 songs for that date. By that time you will all have a good idea whether you can sing and perform together.
  • It takes at least 2-3 months to even know whether your personalities, lifestyles, and schedules fit with 3 other people. Who knows if your tastes in music coincide, much less your tastes in costumes.
  • Be prepared to compromise! Think about it ... you're dealing with 3 individual personalities, their lifestyle, their tastes and schedules. You will not always get your way. You, and you alone can decide how far you can bend.
  • Don't start spending money on costumes and registering until AFTER you're sure you wish to commit to a quartet relationship. The only time you really need to register is if you plan to compete.
  • TCSC requires that you audition before the chorus and Music Team before you can perform outside or with the chorus. They do not require that you have a registered name. This means that you could perform for the Holiday Show or Valentines Day under any name you choose and change it 2 days later.
  • Try not to coach from within the quartet. Unless you're REALLY objective and tactful, and can give and take criticism as it's meant, it's not smart. Get a coach to help or a 5th person not involved with the group to look and listen. Coach yourself - not the other 3 in the quartet. Vowel matching might be the only issue you can play with ... carefully.
