Twin Cities Show Chorus - 2009 International Nashville 04

COMPETITIONS ARE A LARGE AND IMPORTANT PART IN THE LIFE OF A TCSC MEMBER. The chorus this year invited members from other choruses in the region to experience the international stage with us. Members from Zumbro Valley, Vallee de Croix, and City of Lakes joined us for the experience. We THANK YOU ladies for adding your voices to our sound. By the competition rolled around, we were very optimistic and felt probably the most prepared we'd ever been that we could better our Regional score of 610. Most felt they had done their absolute best just prior to stage and we all came off feeling really good about our performances and scores - especially after having watched the winning choruses! Talk about an exciting competition! The 2nd place Audience Favorite had one of the most creative packages seen yet. They did a simulated a video "replay" and "rewind" and "slow motion" and "fast forward" - doing their choreography BACKWARDS! WOW! We can only say we were privileged to be there on the same stage with all the great competitors.

Many thanks goes to Mary Lois Dick [we consider her one of our own], and several other fabulous international vocal coaches including Kim Hulbert, Jean Barford, and Tori Postma.

Judy, our director, says "thank you to each individual member" for choosing personal responsibility (CPR) and adding to her own individual "bricks of knowledge and skill" to our barbershop "wall" of sound and performance. A chorus is only as good as each singer decides it can be. We thank those members of City of Lakes, Vallee de Croix, and Zumbro Valley who joined us onstage for a truly great experience.

We are committed to building on what we've learned, both individually, and as a chorus, and were proud to be representing Region Six at International Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, October 20-24, 2009.

We hope to qualifies for International Competition in Houston, Texas in 2011. Along with the Overall Regional Championship, we have won the Region 6 Chorus Midsize Division AA (45-65 members) 6 times running!

UNIT SOUND (0-70 POINTS)

  • Vocal Skills (Posture, breathing, phonation, resonation, articulation): Resonation - Keep on developing
  • Accuracy (notes, intervals, chords, tuning/intonation, section/part accuracy, synchronization): Intervals - 1st Bye - Eye (up); Tuning - big area needing work; Synchronization - problems in uptune
  • Barbershop Blend (tone production, vowel production): Vowel production - "say, Pay, Loud - need work
  • Barbershop Balance: no notes

ARTISTIC SOUND (0-30 POINTS)

  • Energized vocal line: no comments
  • Tone flow: Sometimes halting - keep it moving forward
  • Dynamic flexibility: no comments
  • Vocal style: no comments

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

An energetic vocal start - good! Now keep that tone in shape even during the pp passages.
OCCASSIONAL individual qualities piercing the veil of unit sound.
Keep working on matching resonances within sections. Lift that tag into full complete tune.

Another compelling start but tuning error and synchronization glitches marred early parts of the song.

You are singing with such joy in this uptune, but precision in tuning and larger degree of stamina required for better accuracy in it

Sound Judge #2 Comments: Bobbette Gantz. Song 1 Score: Kiss Me - 64, Song 2 Score 63. Total 127
Some tuning issues on that challenging intro. All voices need to tune to chords.
Individual voices coming out on sound on softs.
Tuning within sections questionable - be sure all voices agree on the same spot on the nots.
Many strong voices that now need to work relentlessly together to create consistently and flawlessly tuned chords. Clean up the synch to further aid in tuning.

Cone: Not consistent yet.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Good tender beginning to this fine song & arrangement. Soft passages are a little long to carry out the drama of this song. Some tuning issues affect accuracy. A very careful performance. A bit ploddy in spots.

A good start to this busy song & arrangement. Well, the YA SHOUR is just great. You're doing a fine job of keeping this together - but tuning & stamina are suffering at end of song.

SUITABILITY TO PERFORMER: #1 Good choice for you. #2 You run out of gas before you reach the station in this number.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

#1This ballad has everything - beautiful lyrics, strong chords and progressions and an exciting climax - the phrases need more forward motion - each phrase must enertize into the next phrase - not all voices are able to execute your dynamic plan. They had difficulty dutting back the volume to match the rest of the chorus.

#2 you had a very strong start to this fun uptune - the tempo is fine but is presenting a few challenges to you, especially at the very rapid tempo at the end! Last chord was pushed beyond a good musical product.

SUITABILITY TO PERFORMER: #1 OK. #2 very challenging

Expression Judge#1 Comments: Carole Kirkpatrick. Score Song 1 Kiss Me: 69. Score Song 2 Yes Sir: 68. Total 137.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS (0-40 POINTS):

  • Vocal Skills: Your work shows - continue to strengthen

  • Phrasing
  • Embelishments
  • Dynamics:
  • Tempo rhythm
  • Inflection: YA SURE - Great!
  • Energy:
  • Finesse:
  • Emotional communication:

PEFORMANCE EVALUATION: A good phrase plan moving forward nicely. Synch issues apparent within words as not singers going from voel to consonant together. For added vocal drama add a more varied dynamic plan.

A good start! Tempo you have set is right, but it isn't staying consistant - be sure phrase ends are fully stretched and lifted. Fast tempo pick is effective but a bit choppy as to lyric line delivery.

Expression Judge#2 Comments: Betty Clipman. Score Song 1 Kiss Mer: 67. Score Song 2 Yes Sir: 66. Total 133

BASIC REQUIREMENTS (0-40 POINTS):

  • Vocal Skills: continue to strengthen support and resonant vowels

  • Dynamics: Need lyrical clarity

  • Inflection
  • Energy: inconsistent
  • Finesse: not yet
  • Emotional communication: not yet

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

Lots of energy at the start. "How can a kiss" lost emergy and lyric flow. Keep the lyric line solid with consistent vowel to vowel delivery.
Softs need much more energy to stay solid and support.

Open of song #2 had good energy. Chorus - word delivery got chopy and out of synchronization. This challenging song needs stronger execution of the basics in order to be performed at a high level.

Welcoming smiles as the lights came up. Maintain that same level of connection to the audience by adding a stronger sense of performance energy and a more solid commitment to the character.

Fun uptune - good use of commedy to draw us in! Choppy choreography causing visual sync errors - all not interpreting moves in the same manner. Strive for a more solid unit.

Director: Fun and playful!

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Warm welcome on entrance. Faces are emoting. Add even more drama to more fully communicate your lyrical story. Physical expression is there. The performance is a bit contianed - risk and dare more emotionally. You are on the right track. Let go more of this emotional message - you can.

Cuter character began to emerge. Go further - Oh boy- you did there! You are really going in the right direction! Now heighten that character - make changes even more dramatic and emphatic! Go for it all you are the gals to do it. Good solid foundation to build on.

Director: Wow! Really adds to visual
