NEW MEMBER AUDITION PROCESS
is very simple and painless.
- YOU let the Director/Membership Chm know when you feel confident
enough to audition. We've had some take as many as 5 weeks before they felt ready.
It's up to you. When you feel confident in your part on one of the songs we've
been rehearsing, let our Rookie Coordinator or your assigned "orientation guide"
know so she can inform our Director that there's someone wanting to tape. (That
way, the Director knows she has to run an entire song at least once during
the rehearsal.)
- For two rehearsals in a row, one of the Music Staff will ask you to record
yourself during a rehearsal - while in the chorus - on the song(s) of
your choice, with music in hand (optional). We ask that you do this
for at least two rehearsals in a row in case you have a bad night, a
cold, or problems. And you don't have to do the same song - your choice!
This not only gives you the opportunity to get a "good tape",
but it gives the Section Leader and Music Staff a chance to find out
how you're doing and how you sound from within the overall chorus. We
encourage you to memorize your music if at all possible because we perform
that way - without music.
- At the end of the rehearsal, put your name on the tape and turn it
in to the Section Leader.
- The Section Leader will review your tape. If you do well enough on
the first tape, she may tell you (and the Music Staff) "you've passed
your audition". If not, she and the Music Staff will determine if
you need additional one-on-one coaching or other help, learning tapes,
etc. - or just more time to learn the songs better. This can be done
at your pace. This is a HOBBY! and should be FUN!
- PASSING usually requires that you be able to hold
your own part when singing within the chorus and that you sing in tune
at least 90% of the time. If you don't pass the first time, you are
more than welcome to try again. You can also just tape yourself, listen
to it, and check your tape BEFORE you turn it over to the Section Leader
assigned to you.
- Optionally, you can choose to audition in a QUARTET rather than from
within the chorus. Just let the Music Staff person know what you prefer
and she will introduce you to 3 other members from other voice parts
to work with you. You then practice the song of your choice as often
as you like with the quartet. You can work as a foursome to make sure
you're getting your part and holding your own. Singing in a quartet
is something we encourage every member to try at least once just for
the experience of it. Quartet members can't help but become more confident
in their part and confident singers make for a better overall chorus
sound. Then, the 4 of you will sing for the Director and 6-7 Music Staff
members in another room away from chorus.
