T.C.S.C. Bev Watson Scholarship YOUNG WOMEN IN HARMONY EVENTS
The Twin Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines International provides at least one small monetary scholarship (up to $500) annually to support and encourage youth participation in the art of barbershop harmony singing and other vocal music education events beyond high school years.

The award is given in honor of Bev Watson's friendship and support of the Twin Cities Chorus. (See story of our first award recipient, Nana Wolfe.)

If you know of a student or music educator deserving of this award and wish to obtain an Application, or find out more about eligibility requirements and deadlines, email us at: info@tcshowchorus.org or contact one of our Management Team.

Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA) provide several educational events and opportunities in which members and the public can participate every year. Our requirements usually involve attending or participating in one of these events. A more local Calendar of Events (seminars, shows, etc) can be found on our Can-Am Region Six website or on the L'OL District website.

Two letters of recommendation must accompany the Scholarship Application Form.PDF. One should be from an educator who is familiar with the applicant's musical abilities.

In addition to a photograph of the recipient (to be used in publications) and contact information, we ask four basic questions:
  1. Event you plan to attend
  2. Current musical expertise/background
  3. How do you plan to make use of your music education (eg. future occupation or vocation)
  4. Do you plan to pursue additional education in music? If so, provide a brief outline of those plans.

TC has MENC Visitors! February 9, 2000
The evening was considered a great success by all participants! Our visitors were teachers and students from Mound Westonka High School (teacher Jane Brambilla), Lakeville High School (teacher, Nana Wolfe), and Pine Island High School(teacher Verda Pape). The Pine Island chorus has just started as an after school activity.

The program started at 6pm with the Judy Olson and the Twin Cities Music Team covering the barbershop style as compared to other styles of vocal music. Then they were taught a portion of the song "The Band Played On" as a demonstration of barbershop balance. Judy worked with two of the groups to improve their sound and visual performance.
Considerable turnout
At 7:30 they joined the chorus on the risers for warmups. Then 2 of the schools performed for us ... the "Rough Riders" (spur-of-the-moment name...Judy told them they had to have one so that she could announce them properly) from Mound Westonka performed their three numbers for us.

And a quartet from the Lakeville's "Now and Then Singers" did a wonderful acappella rendition of "Ode to Joy" for us.

After that the chorus did several of our more showy numbers and gave them a great send off at about 9PM at which time, we continued on with our rehearsals.

It was such fun to see those youthful faces pick up on the enthusiasm and harmony coming at them from all directions. Let's do it AGAIN! REAL SOON!

Region 6 Barbershop Quartet Competes!
Just Passin' Through (01-02jpt.jpg) JUST PASSIN' THROUGH: (center 4) Jenna Michia, tenor; Sarah Wigley, lead; Andrea Vigstol, baritone; and Katie Mahowald, bass. These four delightful young ladies, coached by Nana Wolfe (far right), their teacher at Lakeville High School (Minnesota), took part in the RISING STAR QUARTET CONTEST (for women age 25 and younger) along with 20 other quartets from around the world.

The Rising Star Quartet Contest was just one feature of an exciting three-day Sweet Adelines International Education Symposium (IES) held Friday, July 27, 2001, in Laurie Auditorium on the campus of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Sweet Adelines International is one of the world's most experienced vocal music education organizations. The symposium included curriculum especially suited to young women singers and their vocal music instructors to encourage young women to develop mastery in their singing technique, and experience the pleasure of singing four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style.

Nana Wolfe was the first recipient of the Twin Cities Chorus Bev Watson Scholarship. The scholarship funded her registration to the this event. The quartet was sponsored to the contest by Sweet Adelines Region 6.

TC wishes to encourage more young musicians to continue their musical pursuits into adulthood. If you know of a student or music educator deserving of this award and wish to obtain an Application, or find out more about eligibility requirements and deadlines, contact us.

Girl Scouts "Singing for Others" February 3, 2001
On Saturday, February 3rd, 50 Girl Scouts, 17 Girl Scout moms and 14 Sweet Adelines spent the day singing, laughing, harmonizing and performing. And what fun they had!

The event was the Greater Minneapolis Girl Scout's "Singing for Others" activity day. The day began at 9:00AM with a half hour presentation on barbershop singing by Montage quartet members Joyce Kisch, Liz Turba, Pat Toerey, and Chris Temperante from Vallee de Croix chorus.

The group then split into three sections. The younger girls, grades 1- 3, and their moms were led by Jan Bovee, Lakes Area Chorus, Marni Fox, City of Lakes Chorus and Linda Schoonover, Twin Cities Chorus. The older girls, grades 4 - 7, and their moms were divided into two groups, one led by Montage quartet and the other by Marcia Olson, Twin Cities chorus and Key Change quartet from Twin Cities chorus, members Lee Lundgren, Gloria Gillette, Barb Harvey and Duane Gawler. Event coordinator, JoAnn Flanagan, Twin Cities chorus, and assistant Kathy Lucken, Vallee de Croix chorus, completed the team and assisted all groups and kept them on schedule.

From 9:45 to 10:45 the groups worked on songs, tags, and rounds and then gathered back together and performed for the whole group. It was amazing what the groups accomplished in an hour!

The younger girls then left and the older girls had lunch and then went back to work in their groups to polish a performance to bring to a local nursing home at 1:00. They developed and practiced emcee material and fine-tuned the songs they had learned that morning. Then it was time to perform!

Each group went to a different nursing home, put on their performance package and then returned to share their experiences, fill out event evaluations and have a snack. The overall consensus was that the day was "awesome". The moms had a great time too and were a great asset, especially to the bass sections!
