2009 Paynesville H.S. "Lil' Diva" Event

Students from 4 different high schools in the Paynesville area came together for an entire day of Barbershop education, learning, singing, and fun!  2 songs were learned and choreography added as well as some showmanship and stage craft. Mid-day saw them all taking an impromptu "danceline" break. Late afternoon saw the girls performing what they had learned for a local audience of parents and friends.

2001 Quartet in San Antonio, Rising Star Competition

Just Passin' Through (center 4) Jenna Michia - Tenor, Sarah Wigley - Lead, Andrea Vigstol - baritone, and Katie Mahowald - bass. These four delightful young ladies coached by Nana Wolfe (far right), at Lakeville High School (Minnesota), took part in the Sweet Adelines International RISING STAR QUARTET CONTEST (for women age 25 and younger) in San Antonio, Texas, along with 20 other quartets from around the world.  The contest was just one feature of an exciting three-day Sweet Adelines International Education Symposium (IES) held Friday, July 27, 2001, in Laurie Auditorium on the campus of Trinity University. The symposium included curriculum especially suited to young women singers and their vocal music instructors to encourage young women to develop mastery in their singing technique, and experience the pleasure of singing four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style.

Nana Wolfe, their coach, was the first recipient of the Twin Cities Chorus Bev Watson Scholarship. The scholarship funded her registration to this event. THe quartet was sponsored to the contest by Sweet Adelines Region 6.

2000 TCSC had MENC Visitors!

February 9, 2000 The evening was considered a great success by all participants! Our visitors were teachers and students from Mound Westonka High Scool (teacher Jane Brambilla), Lakeville High School (teacher, Nana Wolfe), and Pine Island High School (teacher Verda Pape). The Pine Island chorus has just started as an after school activity.

The program started at 6pm with Judy Olson and the Twin Cities Music Team covering the barbershop style as compared to other styles of vocal music. Then they were taught a portion of the song "The Band Played On" as a demonstration of barbershop balance. Judy worked with two of the groups to improve their sound and visual performance.

2000 Quartet from Lakeville H.S. Now and Then SingersA quartet from Lakeville, H.S. "Now and Then Singers" did a wonderful a cappella arrangement of "Ode to Joy" for us.

After that, the chorus did several of our more showy numbers and gave them a great send off at about 9pm at which time, we continued with our rehearsals.

It was such fun to see those youthful faces pick up on the enthusiasm and harmony coming at them from all directions. Let's do it again real soon!

2002 Scouting "Singing for Others"

On Saturday, February 3rd, 50 Girl Scounts, 17 Girl Scout moms and 14 Sweet Adelines spent the day singing, laughting, harmonizing, and performing.

The event was the Greater Minneapolis Girl Scout's "Singing for Others" activity day. The day began at 9:00am with a half-hour presentation on barbershop singing by Montage quartet members Joyce Kisch, Liz Turba, Pat Toerey, and Chris Temperante from Vallee de Croix chorus.

The groups then split into three sections. The younger girls, grades 1-3 and their moms were led by Jan Bovee, Lakes Area Chorus, Marni Fox, City of Lakes Chorus and Linda Schoonover, TCSC. The older girls, grades 4-7, and their moms were divided into two groups, one led by Montage quartet and the other by Marcia Olson, TCSC and Key Change quartet from TCSC, members Lee Lundgren, Gloria Gillette, Barb Harvey, and Duane Gawler. Event coordinator, JoAnn Flanagan, TCSC and assistant Kathy Lucken, Vallee de Croix chorus, completed the team and assisted all groups and kept them on schedule.

From 9:45 to 10:45 the groups worked on songs, tags, and rounds and then gathered back together and performed for the whole group. It was amazing what the groups accomplished in an hour!

The younger girls then left with the older girls had lunch and then went back to work in their groups to polish a performance to bring to a local nursing home at 1:00. They developed and practiced emcee material and fine-tuned the songs they had learned that morning. Then it was time to perform!

Each group went to a different nursing home, put on their performance package and then returned to share their experiences, fill out event evaluations and have a snack. The overall consensus was that the day was "awesome". The moms had a great time too and were a great asset, especially to the bass sections.
